Modern furniture by Qui est Paul?

Qui est Paul? otherwise known as Who is Paul? is a high end modern furniture line launched during  Milans furniture fair that actually narrates in a symbolical way the story and values of a man through the objects he acquires and holds during his life.

Sculpturally designed pieces while highly functional at the same time, most are made out of recycled PE and can be used either inside or out. The first impression of these modular furniture pieces assemble garden rocks and natural stones that are roughly-cut. The organic shape of these Modern Furniture allow an infinite number of settings engaging everyone to take part in the design process by creating its own arrangement. All the pieces are playful, dynamic in shapes and despite their overall extreme appearance, are very comfortable and fun. The first collection of Qui est Paul? was designed by studio Paul and Alain Gilles and edited by several brands with international recognition.

The Best of BKLYN Designs 2008

It’s not the biggest modern design event in the world – or even in New York — but the annual BKLYN Designs Modern Furniture Exhibition, held this month in DUMBO, maintained its reputation this month as the place to spot up-and-coming design superstars before they become household names.  This year’s wunderkind is recent Pratt Institute grad Kenzan Tsutakawa-Chinn, who blew attendees away with his constellation chandelier.  Comprised of 364 LED lights clustered at the tips of 91 copper tubes, the freeform, hanging lamp looks like a sort of ethereal, modern starburst.  Of course, it’s energy efficient – using as much electricity as a 20-volt light bulb — as well as incredibly beautiful.  The designer is currently seeking approval to make the chandelier available to consumers in the near future.

What makes the BKLYN Designs show special is it’s small size – the handful of exhibits are carefully curated, use only local designers and locally sourced materials, and always includes an exhibit from students at the prestigious (and local) Pratt Institute.  Other impressive work this year came from established area shops like Brave Space, Argington and especially Uhuru, who caused a sensation by transforming old bourbon bottles into sleek, modern furniture with a spare, slightly Asian aesthetic.   Finally, a reason to feel good about drinking Jack Daniels…

Transparent, Modern Furniture is Everywhere!

The Barely There Chair

Bubble ChairIt’s been forty years since Eero Aarnio created the Bubble Chair, a seat constructed of transparent acrylic that – in case the name doesn’t give it away – you can see through.  For the past four decades, Aarnio and his Bubble pretty much cornered the transparent seating market.  But no more.  Today, modern furniture you can’t see is everywhere.  It started with Kartell and their Philippe Starck-designed Ghost chairs, a partnership that has grown to produce transparent chairs, lamps, tables and accessories in several styles.  And it has grown into a phenomenon.

Search for “transparent furniture” on Google™ and you’ll find a laundry list of options from around the world in every price range.  Even IKEA® launched a transparent chair that sold out almost immediately.  Which is the other thing about transparent, modern furniture.  It may be hard to see, but the good stuff can be even harder to afford.  So if you’re ready to dish out the big bucks for a piece of furniture you might accidentally walk into, do your homework first.  Make sure it, like Aarnio’s Bubble, is built to last.  If you’re the type who moves on when the trends do, add a few inexpensive pieces for fun instead.

Artecnica Promotes Good Design and Good Karma

KMP Modern FurnitureSure, it looks great on a street or in your apartment, but the “higher” purpose of good modern design has always been to make the world a better place.  So it’s no surprise that the design community is at the forefront of the global movement towards sustainability and social responsibility.  Los Angeles-based Artecnica is one company that’s defining this new way of doing business, employing artisans in developing countries to bring to life earth-friendly creations by modernist superstars including Hella Jongerius and Tord Boontje.

When we first spotted Artecnica, we had no idea they had anything to do with saving the world – we checked them out because their products are just plain cool.  Their sophisticated, hand-crafted TranSglass® pieces – candleholders, tumblers and vases hand-formed from recycled glass bottles by Guatemalan artisans — are included in the permanent collection of MoMA New York.  Their “Witches Kitchen” utensils, also hand-carved in Guatemala, manage to combine the rustic, the modem and the spooky, with slightly-menacing new kitchen must-haves including the “dagger” the “spoonchela.”  And their airy, woven wire Tatu furniture — handcrafted in South Africa — combines traditional form with sleek, urbane design.  Seriously, this stuff is so amazing we’d buy it if it was assembled in sweatshops by child laborers working 14 hour shifts.  Okay, maybe not.  But luckily, what Artecnica calls “Design with Conscience” is what we call just plain gorgeous.
